What is problem solving?
Problem solving is the ability to find answers to life’s everyday difficulties. Good problem solving abilities lead to safe everyday living, and enables the planning for one’s future. It involves several different skills such as memory, reasoning and flexible thinking.
Problem solving may also require the prediction of the consequences and outcomes of decisions. Planning is an important aspect of problem solving as the solutions /answers need to be carried out and this takes organisation. Good problem solving leads to safe everyday living.
What problems arise?
An individual with poor problem solving ability may make decisions that are not in their best interests, such as terminating treatment or altering their financial security. In extreme cases, they may not be able to make decisions at all.
They may be able to find a good solution but not know the steps required to carry out the solution, and it may appear as if they are not trying. If they have difficulties planning their solutions they may make errors, and be random and disorganized in their approach.
